Image Data

Designation IC 2948 and part of IC 2944 (The Running Chicken cluster)
Constellation Centaurus (Cen)
Description Dark clouds, like these Bok Globules, were once thought to be holes in the sky. In fact, the extinction caused by their dust particles blocks the light from the emission nebula behind. A close-up of the group at center can be found here.  The field of view of 45 x 30 arcmin is centered on the intersection between the cluster IC 2944 and the very active nebula IC 2948 at declination - 63°20'.  Here is the H-Alpha only image.
