Image Data
Designation |
NGC 4945, Bennett 57 |
Constellation |
Centaurus (Cen) |
Description |
A fine star field contrasts
nicely with this bright (mag 9.0) edgewise, late-type spiral. The yellow
appearance is caused by about 1 mag of interstellar absorption due to its
low galactic latitude. Together with NGC 5128 (Centaurus A) and M 83, it
forms part of a small group of galaxies 13 million lightyears away.
The mag 11 NGC 4976 elliptical galaxy (right) and the mag 13.0 spiral NGC
4945A (top, patially hidden by mag 8.5 star) are not physically related.
