COMET 92P SANGUIN (1977p)

  Español

Discovery.
The 15 of September 1977,  J. G. Sanguin discovered this comet in magnitude 16th with the double astrograph of 51-cm "El Leocinto", from Argentina. The comet has been confirmed by H.-E. Schuster with the 100-cm Schmidt telescope at the European Southern Observatory; the object was diffuse with some condensation and a very faint tail to the northeast (in moonlight).

Parabolic and elliptical orbital elements have been determined by the undersigned as follows.  The elliptical elements are more probable and are used for the ephemeris computation, by B. G. Marsden,
are from 10 observations Sept. 13 to Oct. 31: . The resulting perihelion date was September 17.44 and the period was 12.52 years.(IAUC 3150).

Recovery.
During early May 1989 ,B. Weller, Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory; R. Coker,California Institute of Technology; and K. Meech, Institute for Astronomy, report their recovery of this comet from observations made with the CTIO Schmidt telescope using a  CCD camera. The comet appeared stellar on all three nights of observation
and determined the magnitude as 22th = m2. (IAUC 4903)
The comet appeared as a 15th-magnitude in 1990. In the following table we put the different dates from return of the comet:
92P/ 2002 Sept.23
92P/1989 J1 1990 Apr. 2
92P/1977 T2 1977 Sept.17
At the comet's appearance in 2002, the maximum brightness reached a magnitude of about 14.3th (CCD) during the period of August to September.
