Recherche

Research

Star clusters, galactic halos and cosmological distances.

In 1968 I developed the concept of " globular cluster systems ". These are today the subject of very active researches the world over. Their value as cosmological distance indicators is well established. They also contribute to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution.

Telescopes and astronomical observatories, adaptive optics

The Canada-France-Hawai’i Telescope Corporation (1980-84) gave me the opportunity to put in operation an excellent large telescope at on of the best sites on Earth and to make it the best by the image quality it delivered. This contributed to develop in Canada a noted expertise in high resolution imaging and naturally led to recognized compentencies in adaptive optics.

Exo-Planets

Since the 90’s my work has been mostly in a the dautingly challenging study of exo-planets by direct imaging. The novel approaches and technologies we have developped to this end will soon allow this to become reality.
