Ghost of Jupiter (NGC3242) Planetary Nebula in Hydra

(RA 10h 24.8m , Dec. -18° 38', 7.8 mag., >16" in diameter)


This bright planetary nebula is easy to notice as a "star" even in 8 x 50 finder. vIt is located 1°50' SSW of m Hydrae (see finder chart below).

The above image was taken on March 24, 2001 from Harrowsmith, Ontario. Cookbook 245 LDC camera was used on Celestron Ultima 8 SCT with an eyepiece projection to achieve f20. White exposures (10 x 60 sec.) were combined with AIP4WIN software.

Only a quater of the original Cookbook frame is shown. North is to the left.
