JUPITER EN 2007

L'apparition 2007 a été une apparition majeure de la planète Jupiter au cours de laquelle l'activité climatique jovienne a connu de profonds bouleversements, comme il s'en produit de manière irrégulière à plusieurs années d'intervalle. Malheureusement, la planète était très basse sur l'horizon pour les observateurs en France puisque circulant dans la constellation du Scorpion et les images n'ont jamais été bonnes. Les phénomènes observés en 2007 constituent un "bouleversement global" (global upheaval) comme on n'en avait pas observé depuis les années 1990-1993 :

1) Episode de disparition-réapparition de la SEB
2) Réapparition de la NTB disparue depuis l'automne 2002
3) Apparition de deux "perturbations sud-tropicales" et observation concomitante du fameux "courant circulant" (voir ci-dessous)

The 2007 apparition has been a major one where several phenomenons constituting a "global upheaval" has been observed, since the last time of 1990-1993. Unfortunately the planet was very low in the sky of France in the Scorpius constellation and the images were never good. Phenonemons observed that year were :

1) Fading and rebuilding of the SEB
2) Rebuilding of the NTB since its fading of 2002
3) Apparition of two "south tropical disturbances" and observation of the famous "circulating current" (read below)

6 et 9 avril 2007
Quelques bonnes observations durant la vague de chaleur de ce mois d'avril 2007. Le 6, première observation, où l'on distingue BA qui a conservé sa teinte rougeâtre (voir l'apparition 2006), et la proéminente Bande équatoriale. Une petite virgule est visible au nord de BA dans la zone tropicale sud : il s'agit d'une des deux perturbation tropicales sud (STropD). Ce phénomène récurrent sur Jupiter, observé depuis deux siècles, est en fait une boucle reliant les deux courant-jet de la STBn et SEBs. Il se crée alors dans la STrZ une circulation anticyclonique qui serait possiblement à l'origine de la Grand tache rouge elle-même (thèse de John Rogers). Le 9, meilleure session de la saison, avec la Grand tache rouge, observée ici en visible RVB, infrarouge 800 nm, et filtre bleu.

Some good observations during the heat wave of this 2007 april month. On the 6th, BA keeps its reddish color from the 2006 apparition . A small "column" is visible in the STropZ : this is one of the two "South tropical disturbances" (STropD). This recurrent phenomenon is seen when two jetstream, the STBn and SEBs, join together into the STrZ to form a closed anticylonic circulation, something that possibly created long ago the GRS itself (from a John Rogers's thesis). On the 9th, the Red spot is observed in color RGB, IR 800 nm, and blue light.

10, 15, 19 avril 2007
Le 10 avril, on remarque sur les images un chapelet de spots sombres et brillants dans la NTB : il s'agit de la réapparition de cette dernière, un phénomène attendu quoique se produisant assez tard puisque la bande avait disparu durant l'apparition 2002-2003. A partir d'une source située sous les nuages visibles, du matériel sombre et clair jaillit et s'étale rapidement en longitude grâce à la très grande vitesse des vents à cet endroit. Au bout de quelques mois, la bande est reconstituée. Les images du 15 et du 19 montrent encore ces spots, avec toujours la STrD le 19. L'éruption commence le 27 mars 2007. On the 10th of april, a remarkable line of dark and bright spots is visible on the NTB : this is the reapparence of the belt, faded since the 2002-2003 apparition. From a source below the main clouds, material is erupted and the stirred away thanks to the fastest winds of the planet. The belt will be rebuilt in a matter of monthes. The eruption begins on march 27th. Look at some Zac Pujic's images taken 48 H later

9 juin, 13, 14 et 31 juillet 2007
L'affaiblissement de la SEB s'est déroulé surtout durant les mois de mai et juin. C'est dès le 17 mai qu'une éruption de mi-SEB (mid-SEB outbreak) débute la reconstitution de la bande, avant même que le processus de disparition de cette denière ne soit complet ! Sur les images du 9 juin, on distingue sur la SEBs une avancée de spots sombres qui proviennent de la source d'éruption et vont reconstituer la bande par sa partie sud. Le phénomène est en tout point identique à celui de la reconstitution de la NTB. Les images du 14 et du 31 juillet montrent la partie de la SEB qui a partiellement disparue.

The fading of the SEB took place mainly during the monthes of may and june. The rebuilding of the belt began very early with a mid-SEB outbreak on 17th may, so the fading has never been complete. On june 9th, some dark spots coming from the outbreak are circulating on the SEBs. They're going to rebuild the belt from it southern component. This phenomenon is strictly identical to that of the NTB reapparance. Images on july 14th and 31th show the part of the SEB that is still partially faded.

4, 9 et 10 août 2007
Les images du 4 et du 9 août montrent le fameux "courant circulant" : les spots sombres issus de l'éruption de la SEB et circulant sur le jet SEBs remontent vers le sud à la faveur de leur rencontre avec la STropD et repartent dans l'autre sens sur le jet SEBn !! Ce phénomène était soupçonné mais n'avait encore jamais été observé de façon claire auparavant. Il prouve de façon définitive l'existence de la circulation anticyclonique formée par la STropD. The 4th and 9th august images show the famous "circulating current" : the dark spots coming from the mid-SEB outbreak are moving on the SEBs jetstream and are drifted to the south thanks to the STropD, and then drift backward on the STBn !! This was believed but never clearly observed before. The figure above illustrate the movements.
