Comparison of DV and MPEG video compression

Movie Box DV versus Dazzle 150

Data acquisition system

The following images were taken at the prime focus of a Fluorite 55 mm F/8 refractor (same focus and light for all images).

- Video camera :
Neptune 100 (Watec Co Ltd) with 1/2" interline transfert CCD detector delivering an analog video signal (same video camera setting for all images).

- DV acquisition/compression :
Pinnacle Movie Box DV (3.6 Mo/s) and Pinnacle 8 acquisition software (sofware default setting for intensity and contrast).
IEEE 1394 connnection.
No delay between acquisition and display.

- MPEG2 acquisition/compression :
Dazzle 150 convertor (800 ko/s) and Movie Star acquisition software (several settings for intensity and contrast were tried).
USB2 connection.
2 to 3 seconds delay between acquisition and display.

First set of comparison

220 images composite
Unsharp mask (1.8 1)

Default software setting for DV acquisition
3 software setting trials for MPEG 2 acquisition

DV
MPEG2
MPEG2 - Sofware setting 2
MPEG2 - Software setting 3

Second set of comparison

2 images composite
Unsharp mask (1.8 1)

Default software setting for DV acquisition

"Best" setting trials for MPEG 2 acquisition

DV
MPEG2

Conclusion :

DV compression gives better resolution at the expense of larger  files (220 Mo/mn for DV and 70 Mo/mn for MPEG2).
MPEG2 compression gives less noisy images.
