Volans (Vol) |
Description |
A splendid and unusual barred spiral galaxy
in the far southern constellation of Volans, NGC 2442 lies 50 million
lightyears away and is thought to be disturbed by an unseen companion
galaxy. At mag 11.3 and with an apparent angular size of only 5 arcmin,
NGC 2442 is both dim and small. Left of center is the mag 13.5
lenticular galaxy ESO 59-11 and elliptical galaxy NGC 2434 is near the
top. North is up in this 45 x 30 arcmin full-chip field. A
close-up of NGC 2442 taken with a 14.5" Ritchey-Chrétien telescope can be found here. |
