Ce serait une erreur de penser que les cadrans solaires avaient avant tout l'objectif utilitaire de dire l'heure. Sans doute, à l'occasion, furent ils établis dans ce but pratique, mais, dans l'ensemble, leur conception et leur intention semblent avoir été la satisfaction esthétique ou religieuse qui résulte de la fabrication d'un dispositif simulant la marche des cieux.
Derek De Solla Price est un célèbre historien des sciences. Il est connu en particulier pour l'étude et l'intérprétation de l'Horloge d'Antikythera mécanisme simulant la marche apparente du Soleil et de la Lune, trouvé vers 1920 dans une épave grecque datant de 80 avant notre ère.
