Comet Boattini (C/2008 J1) was discovered on CCD images taken through a 68 cm Schmidt telescope (Catalina Sky Survey), and the following night was confirmed by several other observatories. This image spans 25' and was taken on the night of its confirmation. |

The period of Comet 8P barely reaches 14 years, and is responsible for a meteor shower (Ursids). Its most recent apparition was very favorable as the comet itself approached Earth a mere 0.25 AU. This image was taken only a few days before perihelium. |
