Comet Boattini (C/2008 J1) was discovered on CCD images taken through a 68 cm Schmidt telescope (Catalina Sky Survey), and the following night was confirmed by several other observatories. This image spans 25' and was taken on the night of its confirmation.

The period of Comet 8P barely reaches 14 years, and is responsible for a meteor shower (Ursids). Its most recent apparition was very favorable as the comet itself approached Earth a mere 0.25 AU. This image was taken only a few days before perihelium.
